Chongqing Airport Gets Smart Security Upgrade

Gunnebo Entrance Control has just completed a major installation at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport, bringing its intelligent BoardSec airport boarding gate system to Terminal 3 as part of a sweeping smart renovation and upgrade.

As Chongqing’s primary gateway to the world—a city that ranks among the most populous on the planet—Jiangbei International Airport saw over 40 million passengers pass through in 2024 alone, placing it among China’s top 10 busiest airports.

To boost security and make airport operations more efficient, Gunnebo Entrance Control has supplied over 150 BoardSec systems. These integrate advanced biometric face recognition with cutting-edge visual behavior identification technology, promising a revolution in self-boarding.

Analyzing behavior through AI

Traditional boarding gates often struggle when faced with unusual passenger behavior. Gunnebo’s Top Visual Recognition Technology rises to the challenge, using high-precision camera arrays and deep-learning algorithms to spot over 20 types of potentially risky actions, including tailgating, reversing, and unattended luggage. If an item is left alone for too long, the system automatically alerts staff—reducing the need for manual checks and boosting efficiency by a staggering 90%.

Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport officials are praising the system’s ability to improve passenger experience while providing data-driven operational management. The implementation of Gunnebo Entrance Control’s intelligent boarding solution has significantly enhanced how the airport runs, ensuring a smoother, more secure journey for passengers. This innovation is a key step in Chongqing International Airport’s ambition to become a leading intelligent aviation hub in China.

Digitalization without compromise

“As a trusted intelligent solution provider for nearly 100 international airports worldwide, Gunnebo Entrance Control is proud to support Chongqing’s digital transformation,” said Davis Zhang, Vice-President China for Gunnebo Entrance Control.

“With advancements in 5G and edge computing, we remain committed to driving innovation in China’s civil aviation industry,” Zhang added. “This project is a testament to our global capability to transform large transport hubs—delivering security, efficiency and an enhanced passenger experience without compromise.”

BoardSec’s next-generation multi-spectrum face recognition system allows for seamless identity verification. Passengers simply walk through the gate as dual-mode imaging (near-infrared and visible light) confirms their identity in a mere 0.3 seconds, with an accuracy rate of 99.98%.

Increasing capacity

The system performs effectively even when conditions are less than ideal, such as strong backlighting or passengers wearing masks. By removing the need for manual code scanning, BoardSec cuts queue times by 70%, increasing the capacity of a single gate from 180 to 320 passengers per hour.

Gunnebo Entrance Control has also equipped the airport with an intelligent equipment management platform. This provides real-time monitoring of gate operations, passenger flow, and system health. Powered by AI, the platform automatically opens additional gates during peak demand, initiates remote diagnostics for maintenance issues, and boosts overall operational efficiency by 60%.
