Gunnebo Safe Storage Commits to Net Zero with SteelZero Pledge

Gunnebo Safe Storage has made a bold move in its sustainability journey, joining SteelZero and signaling a strong commitment to shrinking the environmental impact of its supply chain.

As a Climate Group initiative, SteelZero rallies organizations to speed up the steel industry’s shift to net-zero emissions. Members pledge to use 50% low-emission steel by 2030 and achieve 100% net-zero steel by 2050, all while working with partners to promote sustainable practices.

Steel is the backbone of Gunnebo Safe Storage’s products, including safes, vaults, strongrooms, and other secure storage solutions, accounting for a whopping 40% of the company’s total carbon footprint.

Taking Action for a Greener Future

“Steel is critical to the security and durability of our products, but it also comes with a significant environmental price tag,” says Myriam Bevillon, Head of Research and Development, Quality, and Sustainability at Gunnebo Safe Storage. “By joining SteelZero, we’re taking concrete steps to lessen this impact. This partnership gives us access to the knowledge and collaboration we need to advance our own operations while contributing to broader industry change.”

For Gunnebo Safe Storage, reinforced steel is a primary material purchase and a major source of its carbon footprint. Therefore, switching to certified low-emission and near-zero steel is critical to achieving its goal of becoming a net-zero business by 2045.

Joining Forces for Change

Gunnebo Safe Storage will now collaborate with over 40 other SteelZero members, representing a combined demand of more than 10 million tonnes of steel annually.

Driving Systemic Change

This collective membership is fostering the right environment for systemic change in the steel sector, encouraging innovation and scaling technologies that reduce carbon intensity.

A Collaborative Approach

Sameen Khan, Senior Manager at SteelZero at Climate Group, notes: “Steel is one of the largest sources of industrial emissions, and Gunnebo Safe Storage is demonstrating that leadership in steel decarbonization can come from any sector. By working closely with their supply chain and prioritizing low-emission steel, they’re showing how collaboration and embedding best practices are essential in accelerating the industry’s transition to net zero.”
