Romanian Hospital Boosts Care with Smart Tech

Smart Hospital Bacău, a leading Romanian medical institution, has revolutionized patient care and operational efficiency by integrating cutting-edge technology. The hospital has implemented auxiliary care and fall detection radar systems, along with thermal presence detectors from Hikvision, showcasing how smart devices can transform healthcare and improve outcomes for patients and medical staff alike.

The limitations of traditional nurse call systems

Smart Hospital Bacău provides palliative care as a crucial service, recognizing that these patients often require constant monitoring due to their fragile health.

The hospital acknowledged the limitations of traditional nurse call systems, which rely on patients being conscious and able to press a button—a challenge for those severely ill or with limited mobility. Determined to find better solutions, the hospital sought to enhance its capabilities in this area.

Previously, the hospital relied on manual patient checks, paper records, and shift-to-shift verbal communication. These methods, while traditional, placed a significant burden on staff. The hospital’s care approach was largely reactive without real-time monitoring tools. Recognizing this as an opportunity for growth, the hospital committed to safeguarding both patients and staff from preventable incidents.

Smart devices, smarter care: Hikvision’s comprehensive healthcare solution

To address these challenges, Smart Hospital Bacău partnered with Next M, a leading technology solution provider, to implement a smart healthcare solution using Hikvision products. This comprehensive system includes auxiliary care radars, fall detection radars, thermal presence detectors, touchscreens, and a centralized LCD display, all integrated into the hospital’s nurse call platform.

In the palliative care rooms, each of the 30 beds was equipped with Auxiliary Care Radars (DS-TDSB00-EKH/POE/2m) and Bedside Touchscreens (DS-KHH9530-H(O-STD)/M). The radars continuously monitor heart rate and respiration without requiring patients to wear any devices.

These radars also detect bed presence, sleep patterns, and abnormal movements, sending real-time alerts to nurses when issues arise. The touchscreens, integrated with the Info World (IW) Mobile module by healthcare software expert Info World, ensure seamless software integration with hospital databases and interoperability with hospital information and pharmacy systems. Through secure Android integration, the touchscreens serve as point-of-care digital assistants, enabling medical staff to access patient records right at the bedside.

In high-risk areas such as bathrooms, Fall Detection Radars (DS-TDSB00-EKT/POE/4m) were deployed. These radars can detect sudden posture changes or prolonged stays, allowing staff to respond swiftly to emergencies while protecting patient privacy.

The hospital also installed 15 Thermal Presence Detectors (HM-TD1018-1/QR). Combining thermal imaging and radar technology, these devices provide non-intrusive monitoring of patient movement, including out-of-bed detection, exit alerts, and audio alarms for events such as calls for help.

Finally, a 55-inch LCD display (DS-2055HE-G) was placed in the nurse’s room. This serves as a centralized hub, delivering real-time alerts and monitoring details through the HikCentral platform.

This multi-layered approach ensures comprehensive coverage, with each device tailored to specific monitoring needs. The integration of these technologies into a unified system enables faster and more informed responses to patient incidents, significantly enhancing both safety and efficiency.

A new era of care: Streamlined medical workflows and enhanced patient well-being

The Hikvision smart healthcare solution has delivered significant benefits to both staff and patients at Smart Hospital Bacău. The system has automated routine checks, dramatically improving medical workflows.

Nurses no longer need to conduct frequent manual rounds. Instead, they receive real-time alerts for abnormal events, allowing them to focus on patients who truly need immediate attention. This reduces human error, improves time management, and alleviates staff burnout. The centralized display in the nurse’s room provides instant access to monitoring data, facilitating better coordination and enabling more informed decision-making through trend analysis.

Hospital Manager Ciprian Cojocaru praised the solution, stating, “Before this system, we constantly did rounds to check on patients. Now we know exactly when and where to step in. It has greatly improved our confidence and response times.”

Patient safety and well-being have also seen substantial improvements. The system continuously and non-intrusively monitors patients, immediately detecting emergencies such as falls or breathing problems, even for those unable to call for help. Faster responses reduce the risk of incidents escalating. The privacy-friendly technology, which operates without video, ensures patients remain comfortable and secure.

Additionally, the data gathered from these devices helps create more personalized care plans. Medical teams can identify early signs of health decline and proactively adjust treatments accordingly.

Beyond these immediate benefits, the implementation of the Hikvision solution has enhanced the hospital’s reputation as a modern, forward-thinking institution. Its adoption of smart healthcare sets a new standard for palliative care, fostering trust among patients and medical professionals alike.
