Cognitec reigns supreme in the realm of age estimation and verification tech, snagging the top spot for accuracy, according to the latest U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) tests.

The NIST report, titled NIST FATE: Age Estimation and Verification, unveils a comprehensive analysis of age estimation accuracy across the globe, dissecting performance across different demographics, including gender and geographic location. When the scores were tallied, averaging the rankings across both genders and all six regions, Cognitec emerged as the clear frontrunner, achieving the best overall rank.

The numbers don’t lie. Ordering the algorithms by the average of the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) rates over all genders and regions further solidified Cognitec’s position at the pinnacle of accuracy.

Significant Accuracy Gains Noted

But the story doesn’t end there. NIST also delved into the advancements made in algorithmic accuracy since 2014. By putting current algorithms to the test on the same dataset used back then, the agency highlighted the strides made in the field. Cognitec’s current algorithm demonstrated the most impressive error rate reduction compared to its 2013 submission, which was also the best-performing algorithm in 2014. Furthermore, it achieved the highest proportion of images with improved accuracy.

Age Verification Tech Gains Importance

As governments worldwide increasingly demand effective age assurance technology to shield underage users from inappropriate digital content and illegal online purchases, the spotlight on age estimation algorithms has intensified. Immigration agencies, too, are turning to these technologies to conduct age assessments of asylum seekers lacking birthdate documentation.

Technology vendors are stepping up to the plate, offering age estimation algorithms that leverage facial analysis to verify that individuals meet age requirements (18, 21, or other key ages), supporting robust age assurance methods. The ongoing NIST test, a crucial benchmark in the industry, currently evaluates 30 algorithm submissions from 18 different developers, underscoring the rapid evolution and growing importance of this technology.
