Smart Bluetooth Keys Secure Staff and Fans at German Stadium

Düsseldorf’s MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA Scores Big with Digital Security Upgrade

The MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA, Düsseldorf’s premier multi-purpose venue and home to Fortuna Düsseldorf, can hold a staggering 66,500 fans. But with a constant stream of events, from high-stakes football matches to blockbuster concerts, keeping the stadium secure was a challenge.

Stadium managers D.LIVE decided it was time to ditch their outdated mechanical master key system. They needed a security solution that was not only reliable but also flexible enough to handle the ever-changing demands of a modern entertainment venue, without the constant headaches of lost keys.

Lost keys were a frequent problem, thanks to the revolving door of event formats and service providers. This led to significant administrative burdens and unexpected costs. The sheer size of the arena and the number of areas requiring security made it clear that only a digital locking system could provide the necessary performance and convenience.

Durability was another key concern. Let’s face it, things can get a little rowdy at football and music events. The new system had to be tough enough to withstand the occasional accidental kick or bump. Devices needed to be robust and discreet, without protruding from the doors.

Finally, D.LIVE needed a better way to manage access to the stadium’s private spaces, including the Promenade, Merkur Business Club, and luxury boxes. These areas can accommodate nearly 7,000 people for meetings, press conferences, and product presentations. The new system had to allow for individual access rights to be granted and revoked quickly and easily, especially for external event organizers and operators.

Innovative Key-Based Digital Access

After careful consideration and based on their experience with other local venues, D.LIVE chose eCLIQ, a programmable-key locking solution from ASSA ABLOY’s suite of Digital Access Solutions. The eCLIQ system excelled in security, reliability, and user-friendliness.

The new system features approximately 2,500 wireless cylinders and around 1,150 programmable eCLIQ Connect keys.

Each authorized keyholder now carries an eCLIQ key that can be programmed with specific access permissions. This adds a layer of security, as access rights can be revoked instantly, and lost keys can be blocked, preventing unauthorized entry.

Convenient Management of Contractor Access

“One of the reasons we chose eCLIQ Connect keys was to enable us to grant or revoke authorisations to external organisers and operators via Bluetooth in a rapid and user-friendly way,” says Lukas Angenendt, VEFK & Project Manager Electrical Engineering, D.LIVE.

User-friendly software makes it simple for stadium managers to issue temporary access to contractors, cleaning staff, and other event personnel. This significantly streamlines site maintenance and management. For added security, eCLIQ Connect keys must be validated on-site using a PIN code entered into a smartphone app.

Beyond the enhanced digital security, eCLIQ’s flexibility was a major selling point. The system is easy to manage and program. Power and communication with each cylinder are supplied by the battery-powered key, eliminating the need to replace batteries in every device.

The low-maintenance cylinders require no wiring and sit flush with the door, making them resistant to vandalism. The cable-free installation was also quick and easy, taking just two weeks during a break in the stadium’s event schedule.
