Hikvision Tech Helps Turkey Give Stray Dogs a Better Life

In Gölbaşı, Ankara, a haven for stray dogs buzzes with activity, where volunteers playfully interact with their furry companions. This peaceful scene, however, is the result of a determined effort fueled by community spirit and an unexpected technological boost.

Giving stray dogs a warm shelter

With over 4 million stray dogs struggling in Turkey due to insufficient shelter facilities and limited access to essential care, the situation is dire. Fazilet Eda Altıöz, who has dedicated nearly five years to helping street animals, felt compelled to act. “These dogs aren’t just strays — they’re family,” she emphasizes. “I hope to leverage my strength to make their lives better.”

On January 1, 2024, Ms. Fazilet realized her vision by opening Sokak Hayvanlarına Yardım ve Yaşatma Derneği (Association for Helping and Supporting Street Animals), a 7,000 m² shelter. Her mission: to shield stray dogs from violence and danger. But as the first dogs arrived, a new challenge presented itself.

Caretakers troubled by safety concerns

The shelter’s vast area, while offering ample space, posed safety concerns. Patrolling the grounds alone proved difficult for Ms. Fazilet, making it hard to prevent intruders or dogs from escaping – both serious risks. Despite the dedicated efforts of volunteers, the animals and their caretakers remained vulnerable.

Guardians that never sleep

Learning about the shelter’s challenges, Hikvision stepped in to help, providing its 24/7 ColorVu Cameras and Network Video Recorder (NVR) system to enhance security. Installation was successfully completed with the support of Hikvision’s partner, ENB Bilgisayar.

These devices transformed the shelter overnight. Volunteers can now monitor every corner of the property with clear images, day or night. “It’s like having a guardian angel,” Ms. Fazilet says. “We can finally keep an eye on our dear friends from afar, even after dark. This brings us so much joy.”

The impact went beyond security, redefining care. By automating surveillance, the cameras freed volunteers from constant patrols, allowing them to dedicate more time to direct animal care.

A safer future written in light

Today, the shelter exemplifies the power of combining technology and compassion. Hikvision’s devices have become essential to the shelter, silently ensuring safety while volunteers focus on care and healing.

“I believe this isn’t just about dogs,” Ms. Fazilet reflects. “It’s about respect. Every life is equal, and with love and proper care, we can bring hope to these vulnerable souls. We are truly grateful to Hikvision for extending a helping hand so we can build a better place together.”

Her words capture the essence of this endeavor: technology as a silent guardian, offering protection and hope to those who need it most. Just as the shelter has given these stray dogs a second chance, Hikvision is committed to using its technology to create safer, more compassionate spaces for animals and people. The company will continue to give back to the community and society, continuing its journey as a responsible global corporate citizen.
