Genetec, a global leader in physical security software, has announced that Texas A&M University is revolutionizing its parking enforcement with Genetec AutoVu automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) technology.
Tech-Savvy Parking at Texas A&M
Faced with a growing student and staff population, Texas A&M’s Transportation Services division struggled to manage its 36,000+ parking spaces. The old system of physical permits and foot patrols was simply too slow and resource-intensive.
From Paper to Pixels: A Parking Revolution
Following the successful implementation of Genetec Omnicast, Texas A&M turned to Genetec AutoVu ALPR to solve its parking woes. By equipping enforcement vehicles with AutoVu SharpZ3 cameras and installing fixed ALPR cameras at parking lot entrances, the university created a real-time monitoring system. This allows enforcement teams to quickly spot unregistered vehicles and focus their patrols where they’re needed most. The move to virtual permits means no more paper receipts on dashboards while waiting for hang tags. Vehicle information is now instantly available in the system.
Efficiency Gains and Cost Savings
“Moving away from paper permits and hang tags was a huge win, freeing up time and resources,” said Dell Hamilton, Parking Systems Manager at Texas A&M. “With Genetec AutoVu, we can allocate resources more effectively, like increasing patrols in high-violation areas, and we’ve cut overhead costs by eliminating the need to print and distribute hang tags.”
Looking Ahead: Expanding the Tech Footprint
Texas A&M isn’t stopping there. Building on the success of Genetec AutoVu and Omnicast, the university is looking to further upgrade its parking infrastructure. Transportation Services is partnering with T2 Systems, a Genetec partner, to implement ALPR-based access control in a campus garage with an existing Genetec ALPR system, with plans to expand to other garages. Additionally, over 60 of its transit buses have been outfitted with Security Center Fleet Monitoring, with the remaining 30+ buses scheduled for completion this year.
A Winning Partnership
“We want to keep expanding our use of Genetec ALPR. Genetec solutions are reliable and effective,” said Hamilton. “Our team has significantly improved our parking and transit operations using Genetec. I can’t imagine working with anyone else.”
