Barcelona Port Boosts Security and Efficiency with Tech Upgrade

Genetec, a global heavyweight in physical security software, has just announced a major win: its Security Center platform is now the backbone of security operations at the bustling Port of Barcelona. This upgrade is a game-changer, boosting the port’s safety measures, streamlining operations, and ultimately, making it a more efficient hub.

As one of the Mediterranean’s key logistics centers, the Port of Barcelona has seen explosive growth, bringing with it a new set of security and operational headaches. To tackle these challenges head-on, the Port Authority launched an ambitious modernization project, with the goal of transforming the port into a safer, smarter, and more environmentally friendly environment.

A Unified Approach to Evolving Security Needs

The port’s previous security setup, while functional, lacked the agility and interoperability needed to handle today’s complex demands. The ability to seamlessly connect and manage devices from different manufacturers was limited, hindering real-time decision-making – a critical factor when you’re overseeing infrastructure of this scale.

To address these limitations, the Port Authority chose Genetec Security Center for its open, unified platform. This platform seamlessly brings together video surveillance, access control, intrusion detection, and other security technologies into a single, easy-to-manage interface.

After a successful pilot program using virtual servers, the port migrated its CCTV infrastructure. It has grown from 180 cameras to over 530, with plans to push that number past 800 in the coming years. Alongside this expansion, the port has integrated advanced technologies like access control, intercom systems, video analytics, forensic tools, fire detection, and real-time occupancy analysis.

Tangible Results From Day One

The impact of Genetec Security Center has been immediate and impressive. Port operators can now manage all security systems through a single, unified tool, which streamlines workflows and dramatically reduces response times to incidents. Maintenance and operational efficiency have also seen improvements across the board, translating into significant cost savings.

The system has proven particularly valuable during high-profile events like the America’s Cup and Nadal al Port, where it helps manage crowds and vehicles, ensuring smooth and safe operations.

“The flexibility and scalability of Security Center have allowed us to centralize all our systems, reduce response times, and improve operations,” said Dídac Höflich, ICT Infrastructure Project Manager at the Port of Barcelona. “Genetec has provided us with a long-term solution that evolves with our needs, while also giving us peace of mind, knowing we are prepared for any challenge.”

“Working with the Port of Barcelona demonstrates how unified physical security can enhance not just safety, but also efficiency and scalability for critical infrastructure,” said Jordi Charles Rodriguez, Account Executive at Genetec Inc. “We’re proud to support the Port Authority’s long-term vision and help lay the technological foundation for the port’s continued growth and innovation.”
